APA Coordination Meeting Reaffirms Parliamentary Solidarity and Supports Azerbaijan’s Candidacy for IPU Presidency
APA Coordination Meeting, convened on the margins of IPU 153rd Assembly in Arusha, brought together delegations of APA Member Parliaments from 18 countries to exchange views on matters of common interest and strengthen parliamentary coordination.
Chaired by H.E Mr. Al Saloom, Representative of the President of the APA, the Meeting provided an important opportunity for Member Parliaments to consult on developments of common concern and to reaffirm the value of continued dialogue and coordination among Asian parliamentary delegations participating in major international parliamentary gatherings.
In his report to the Meeting, H.E. Dr. Mohammad Reza Majidi, Secretary General of the APA, briefed participants on the activities of the APA Secretariat since the 16th APA Plenary Meeting, held in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, in January 2026.
He outlined implementation of the Organization’s programs of activities, recent initiatives undertaken by the Secretariat, forthcoming programs, and ongoing efforts to advance the institutional work of the APA.
A significant part of discussions focused on the forthcoming election of the President of the IPU, which is scheduled to take place during the 153rd IPU Assembly. In this context, the participating APA delegations expressed their full support for the candidacy of H.E. Ms. Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan, for the presidency of the IPU, highlighting the importance of effective parliamentary leadership and continued engagement in advancing parliamentary diplomacy at the international level.
The Meeting also provided an opportunity for delegations to exchange views on the three emergency items proposed for consideration by the 153rd IPU Assembly.
The three proposals submitted to the meeting included:
• Bahrain with the support of Arab Group “Ensuring freedom of navigation, maritime security and the flow of international trade through maritime corridors and straits, in accordance with international law,”
• Iran: The proposal submitted by the Islamic Republic of Iran concerns “Condemnation of the military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran in flagrant violation of international law”
• Nepal: “Protecting civilians and critical civilian infrastructure in armed conflicts: urgent parliamentary action to uphold international law”
The exchange of views reflected the importance attached by APA Member Parliaments to contributing constructively to international parliamentary deliberations and to addressing regional and global challenges through dialogue, consultation and peaceful means, in accordance with international law.
The Coordination Meeting reaffirmed the APA’s established role as a platform for parliamentary consultation, coordination and cooperation among Asian countries, particularly on the margins of major international parliamentary gatherings.
Participants underscored the shared commitment of Member Parliaments to the enhancement of parliamentary diplomacy, promoting mutual understanding, and development of cooperation and solidarity across Asia.
The Arusha Coordination Meeting held on the margins 153rd IPU Assembly, draws together parliamentarians from across the world under the overarching theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”
The Meeting further demonstrated the APA’s continued contribution to international parliamentary dialogue and to advancing collective voice and interests of Asian parliaments within the wider parliamentary spectrum.
